after reading what he said about the dye, it sounds like he primed it first, which isn't how dye is meant to work. dye is meant to stain the original product. if it is chipping off, that means he primed it first and then dyed the primer.
we are very familiar with this mod here, as many of us have done it. we like to refer to it as the ds to gba mod.
in a nutshell, the process is to dremel off the excess plastic, fill in the holes using some type of filler (epoxy, epoxy putty, liquid ABS, etc). you then sand sand and more sand till you are happy with the outcome (this is a very time consuming process and takes a LOT of patience if you want it looking good). i personally use sanding sponges, others use plain sand paper. you want to start with a higher grit and work your way to a fine grit for a nice finish. when you think it's good, you put a coat of primer on. this will make flaws glaringly obvious. so don't feel bad if it doesn't look as perfect as you want. use spot putty to fill in the fine "cracks" and "holes". sand with fine grit. repeat the primer/spot putty/fine sand process till you are happy with how it looks. then, use the color paint you want in thin light coats, sanding lightly with fine grit between layers, till you are happy.
