not lots of time tonight for modding. it's movie night!
i was able to get a little more done, though.
stripping the board down further. removed brightness and volume thumb wheels, headphone jack, and a/v out jack.
removed player 2 port.
getting the board more flat without relocating everything. bent these black things down so that they are now about the same height as that silver square in the far right. that silver square is not possible to relocate, so getting the black components the same thickness is good enough.
what i removed tonight. top row, i will not be using. i'll keep the thumb wheel for later use. possibly the a/v out port. the bottom row will be relocated for use in the portable. volume thumb wheel, headphone jack, and player 2 port.

since it's saturday, it was def time to get started on case work. now that i know what size screen i'm def gonna have, means i can def get started.
cut line for top of cart slot cover.
cut plan for front.
thickness cut line for case.
time to get cutting!
top cut off cart slot cover. cut lines for thickness.
rough cut for thickness for cart slot cover. still needs fine sanding.
controls cut out, ready to be super glued in.
rough cuts for controls to go in and very rough cut for screen.
very rough cut for thickness of portable - this will need a loooooooooooot more work.
controls super glued in. note, i did not realize until this point that the dpad is extremely not flat on the top. it's flat on the underside. hence why so much is sticking out above the case on the upper left. will have to sand it down later.
controls installed using ABS.
that's probably about it for today. the case is sitting out in the sun, allowing the acetone to evaporate right now. i really do wish i had found the ABS method faster. it's really cool to watch as you apply it on an ABS case. you see it make the case sticky and start to meld. gonna be a much more solid bond. i'm not sure if the nomad case is ABS or not, but it did seem to be wanting to stick to it very well. so here's hoping!

ok, so i lied. i decided to do some more work. lol!
from left to right: volume thumbwheel, screen controls (minus, menu, plus), & on/off switch.
filed down the screen hole quite a bit. still not perfect, but that kinda of has to wait till i have my screen. drilled speaker holes and the power led hole.
decided to get the HandyGen logo created, using the Nomad font. of course, there is no such font, so i had to build it myself using just the Nomad lettering. i think it came out pretty good! obviously, i can't have my compo paper in this, as it's a gimp file. but i promise i did just sit down and make it this afternoon.
also, the "signature" blue mushroom for the back, just like all my other portables in the mushroom series!

cart slot cover sanded. standard genesis carts will sit flush with the top of the back of the case. the bigger carts will stick out slightly (but i don't currently have any so won't be able to show).
filling in some divots in the plastic for the cart slot cover.
reinforcing the top screw posts for cart slot cover. they took quite the beating when sanding.
first sanding of front and button fit test. i will need to use more filler around the dpad. i sanded some holes back in.
after a quick bath to get all the plastic dust off.
got the back to fit again. case was slightly tapered, so had to do some case modding to get the back to fit. need to do some case work to fix some mistakes i made in this process.
had to dremel out the inside edges so the back fits.
the thickness should end up at 2.5". that's just 1/2" thicker then the HandyNES! not too bad considering there is more to the nomad then there is to the NES. plus, my batteries are quite a bit thicker. i MAY be able to get it thinner but won't know until i am further along.
size comparisons with the mushroom series. this case is 1"x1" taller/wider then the case i've used before.
thickness comparisons with the mushroom series. trying to determine how i want to paint this to keep it in the mushroom series. the back pice is so thin. i may end up painting part of the front white to make up for it.
