If I understand you correctly you are just extending the pins on the charger through an power jack on your projects to attach it to the battery? Would the charger be suficient enough to power and charge the system in that case? Those chargers are designed to just charge without anything attched if I'm not mistaken. And would it be possible to include some sort of charge led on the portable to check if the batterys need recharging, there is probably an led on the charger itself to tell when it's charged but I would also like to know when it's empty.

if you are in the states, i strongly recommend using battery space.
this charger here will make it possible for you to charge and play at the same time. and, it has the option to include the charge barrel you'd need for your project. the charger is good for any 7.4v li-ion or li-polymer setup.
as to a low battery indicator, there are many ways to accomplish this. you can build your own, or you can buy pre made ones. but, i'm not quite as versed in this as some others here. let's see if they can offer you better insight.
I do not unfortunalty, I'm from the Netherlands like apparently more modders here.
The charger made for the batterys would also work just fine if I charge them with the protable switched off, I think I would then need a switch to toggle between charging and playing right? Else the system would also turn on or at least drain power that should go to the battery.
As for the battery indicator, we will just wait for someone more knowledgeable on this subject.
EDIT: I just thought about it and the power switch would already function as a toggle between charging and playing by simply disconecting the system from the batterys thus isolating the batterys for charging.

Seriously, chevy? You've included low battery indicators in your projects before, right? I'd say that makes you well versed.
On the topic of charging jacks, the barrel jacks are just the most common type used for charging. You could literally use any type of connector as long as you have two separate lines (one for voltage, one for ground). You could use a USB jack, headphone jack, you could even use alligator clips!
Let's just stick with barrel jacks.
